Dane Palmer is a marimbist who travels all over to perform. Top left is a recent rehearsal with soprano Lawren Hill before a performance with Boston Percussion Group. Picture top right is from a performance in Wisconsin with Zeltsman Marimba Festival. Pictures on the bottom right is from Dane's stint in Shenzhen, China. Bottom left is Dane's cat, Suki, telling him he's practiced enough for today.

Story

All I've ever wanted to do my whole life is perform live music. This desire has turned into two degrees from conservatories and a slew of albums from defunct rock bands. During this time, I became frustrated with the stigma associated with ‘pop’ music. Why does this bother me so much?

We should question and analyze all music with the same level of scrutiny that we afford the music of Mozart and Beethoven. It’s up to us to try to hear everything and understand as much as possible. If you're interested in music, you should expose yourself to everything.

My goal is to create an open environment where musicians of all communities can enjoy the existence of a moment. Enjoy art for what it is: a trigger for an experience. Be it emotional, physical, or intellectual. Try not to get bogged down with the analysis of a piece of music while you're first hearing it. Try to let the whole piece exist on its own before you tear it apart.

We should hear the music first. Lets start with that.

Current

Current Projects

I am currently commissioning pieces from composers for any combination of marimba, electronics, and voice. I am most interested in shorter pieces that follow the structure and function of a pop tune, while still maintaining the composer's vocabulary. If you're interested, please head to my 'Keep In Touch' page and send me an email.

Zeltsman Marimba Festival

This is an amazing marimba festival held at various times throughout the year. I am fortunate enough to be the production manager for it and get to work with a lot of outstanding musicians.

Boston Percussion Group

This is a very fun group I have the honor of being a part of. We play mostly in the greater Boston area giving classical concerts, pops concerts, and educational performances.

Lawren Hill

A soprano who I happen to be married to. We perform together fairly often. Look for recordings of us together to be posted soon!
